Do you know what to do to protect your business, your employees, and yourself from legal liability?
Can you defend your actions-or those of your employees-if you do end up in court?
Staying out of trouble is a matter of being prepared. And that's exactly what you'll learn in
Fair, Square, and Legal-clear, unambiguous, step-by-step methods of documentation, compliance,
and prevention for every business-related action that can raise legal liability.
Written by a manager for managers, the course translates complex legal concepts and precedents
into a set of easy-to learn guidelines for managing people. It gives you a systematic knowledge of
the ways the laws governing equal opportunity and employee rights protect not only your employees,
but you, the manager, as well. You'll see that understanding and adhering to employment law is simply
good business.
You'll learn how to:
- Identify potential employment law violations before they happen
- Investigate a harassment complaint
- Write safe job advertisements and job descriptions
- Conduct safe hiring interviews and performance appraisals
- Determine what constitutes "reasonable accommodation" or an employee with a disability
- Recognize a "hostile work environment"
- Develop an effective sexual harassment policy
- Take court-approved progressive disciplinary action prior to dismissing an employee
- Take nine court-recognized steps to manage a force reduction
Course Objective:
Understand key, aspects of employment law to manage safely and avoid legal liability.
About This Course
As one course among many offered in the American Management Association's curriculum,
Fair Square, and Legal: A Manager's Guide to Safe Hiring, Managing, and Firing Practices
has been written for managers who need to make safe hiring, managing, and firing decisions,
often without the benefit of specific policies or procedures to guide their actions. This course,
based on the best-selling AMACOM book of the same name, features a unique approach that focuses
on management, rather than legal, issues. This perspective gives you the information to make
decisions that not only meet the requirements of the law but also conform with the best practices
of effective management. In this course, you will learn what the laws that govern hiring,
managing, and firing decisions mean to you as a working manager. You will see how courts have
applied those laws in a series of actual cases, and you will gain the perspective necessary to
make safe, effective business decisions for yourself and your company. In an increasingly
litigious society, Fair, Square, and Legal: A Manager's Guide to Safe Hiring, Managing,
and Firing Practices gives you the information and insight needed to manage your business
legally, profitably, and successfully.
