A Manager's Guide to HR Law has been adapted from Paul Falcone’s book, The Hiring and Firing Question and Answer Book, originally published by AMACOM. The original book (as the name implies) was structured in a Q&A format. It's a great companion to this course because it's organized for easy and quick reference.

This self-study course takes the information from The Hiring and Firing Question and Answer Book and represents it for the needs of someone learning the topic. This course focuses on issues that are key success factors for any organization–finding and retaining top talent, handling substandard job performance challenges, and dealing head-on with terminations and layoffs. A Manager's Guide to HR Law covers fundamental legal issues, answers key employee relations questions, and addresses the skills and knowledge all managers need to keep their business safe and competitive.

As in other entries in this series, you'll find a range of exercises and activities to help you learn the material fully and apply the skills in a variety of real-world situations. You'll find the author's command of the material, his clear and practical examples, and his insights about policy and process of great value as you deal with similar issues in your own organization. Please note that any first-person references throughout the course are the author's advice on how he would suggest handling a particular situation.

Paul Falcone is an HR executive and has held senior-level positions with Nickelodeon, Paramount Pictures, and Time Warner. He is the bestselling author of a number of AMACOM books, including 101 Sample Write-Ups for Documenting Employee Performance Problems, 101 Tough Conversations to Have with Employees, 96 Great Interview Questions to Ask Before You Hire, 2600 Phrases for Effective Performance Reviews, and 2600 Phrases for Setting Effective Performance Goals. He is a long-term contributor to HR Magazine and instructor in UCLA Extension's School of Business and Management.

Michael S. Dobson is an internationally known authority on project management and author of 24 previous books, including two other entries in AMACOM's self-study line, Managing Multiple Projects and Project Risk and Cost Analysis.
